Sodium hydroxide is essential to traditional cold process soapmaking. During a chemical reaction called saponification, sodium hydroxide reacts with oils and fats to form soap and naturally occurring glycerin. When a cold process formula is properly calculated, made, and fully cured, no active lye remains in the finished bar. Without this reaction, oils and goat milk would not become true soap.
